150 Years of Discovery and Impact

From its earliest moments in February 1876, Johns Hopkins stood as a model for a new kind of university. Ours would be an institution that would conduct path-breaking research and share that knowledge and insight with the world. Over the ensuing 150 years, Johns Hopkins has done just that, igniting a cascade of groundbreaking discoveries and milestones that have rippled across its communities, the nation, and the world. Explore that extraordinary legacy below.

Laying the Groundwork for Johns Hopkins

As Mr. Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore-based businessman and financier, reflected on the conclusion of an illustrious career, he pondered what his legacy might be. Inspired by his contemporaries, including fellow philanthropist George Peabody, Hopkins envisioned a hospital attached to a university—a new model for higher education that would pair a commitment to research and clinical care with education. In his final years of life, he deputized 12 of Baltimore’s leading businessmen to take on this charge. Upon his passing in 1873, he left a $7 million bequest to establish this university and hospital. Three years later, that vision would begin to become reality.

Methodology

Staff affiliated with the Special Collections and Archives at Johns Hopkins University, along with a consulting historian, led the development of the content for this timeline. In identifying entries for inclusion, they consulted a variety of sources, including the timeline developed by Mame Warren for the institution’s 125th anniversary, institution-specific chronologies created by our schools and divisions, and individual submissions from development and alumni officers at all nine schools to the sesquicentennial office.

Staff also heavily relied on the 2026 institutional history of Johns Hopkins, published by historian Andrew Jewett, and individual histories of the School of Medicine and School of Nursing.

That initial survey produced more than 300 milestones spanning the institution’s history. With input from other university offices, staff produced the final spectrum of entries included in this timeline.
